Science: Head of Department: Mrs A Casserley

    Key Stage Three

Years 7 to 8 are taught general science using the ‘Activate’ scheme.

They have 3 lessons a week and receive one homework over this time.

Pupils are taught 9 units in each academic year and are continuously assessed by means of tests. These assessments are used to set developmental targets.

The average mark for each pupil is reported at the end of the academic year as a progress statement.

    Units studied include:

    Cells

    Space

    Reactions

Structure and Function of Body Systems

    Energy and Electricity

    The Periodic Table

In Year 8, there is a residential Ecology Trip to Gilwell Park, where pupils experience field work, handling animals and outdoor activities.

GCSE work starts in Year 9, in preparation for Year 10.

    Key Stage Four

All pupils study Combined Science. Pupils will have three separate teachers to deliver the Biology, Chemistry and Physics components of the course.

Pupils will follow the AQA syllabus leading to two GCSEs in Science.

    In Science topics include:

    Keeping healthy

    Our Changing Planet

    Structures and Properties

    Radiation and life

    Old and New Species

    Waves

    Energy from the Nucleus

There is no coursework element but they have to study a range of required practical experiments which they will be examined on.

    Triple Science

The highest achieving pupils are offered this pathway based on suitability. They finish with three separate Science GCSEs.
